Margaret E. Normann

Margaret E. (Peg) Normann died peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Though born and raised in Providence, R.I., her heart lay in Bridgton, where she spent all her summers at Narramissic (the Peabody-Fitch farm) owned at the time by her mother, Mrs. Margaret Monroe and later donated by Mrs. Monroe to the Bridgton Historical Society. She began attending South Bridgton Congregational Church at this time, and continued to attend there in the summers for over 80 years. She married Conrad Normann in 1952, after earning her bachelor’s degree in Drama from Vassar College. She went on to earn two master’s degrees, one in English and the other in Recreation, while raising their four busy children.

In addition to acting as Bedford, N.Y.’s Town Coordinator for Senior Affairs and Assistant Recreation Supervisor, as well as numerous other volunteer leadership positions, she was one of the original incorporators and directors of AHOME, an organization that continues to provide affordable housing for fragile populations to this day. She served St. Matthews Church as a volunteer and was one of the first women in N.Y. State to become an ordained Episcopal deacon. As deacon, she served with joy at The Church of the Holy Communion in Mahopac and at St. Marks Church in Mt. Kisco.

In 1990, Peg purchased the then-dilapidated Lt. Robert Andrew house on South Bridgton Road. After several years restoring the property, her tenacity earned a spot for the home on the National Register of Historic Places. She named it “Margaret House” after her mother and offered pastoral counseling and Christian retreats there. Peg’s love for her family, friends and associates, her enthusiasm for life, her drive to help those in need, and her desire to leave the world a better place than she found it made her an incredibly special person who touched many lives. She will be dearly missed.

She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Conrad Neil Normann Sr.

She is survived by her four children, Kristin Normann Mudge, Gretchen Normann Wierdsma, Conrad Neil Normann, Jr. and Parker Monroe Normann; their spouses; her 11 cherished grandchildren; as well as her nieces and nephews, her 14 godchildren, and many dear friends.

She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband on Monday, July 22, following a service at South Bridgton Congregational Church at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial contributions to the Bridgton Historical Society, designated to Narramissic, PO Box 44, Bridgton ME 04009.
