FA announces plan to hold prom, graduation in August

Erin Mayo, Head of School, Fryeburg Academy

FRYEBURG — While Maine could be seeing remote learning for students over the remaining school year, Fryeburg Academy plans to enable the Class of 2020 to enjoy keynote events — be it in August.

In the school’s month electronic newsletter released today (April 8), Head of School Erin Mayo announced to students and families that Fryeburg Academy will hold prom and commencement activities.

“We don’t know, of course, when Maine’s “stay at home” order will end, nor how soon afterward it may again be advisable to hold large group gatherings, but it’s increasingly clear that we cannot hold to traditional, currently scheduled May dates,” Mayo wrote. “Moving our year-end events to later dates in the summer is necessary, and with so much uncertainty about public health dictates, it seems wisest to shoot for August.”

If prohibitive pandemic measures have been lifted by this time, the Academy will hold the prom at the Old Saco Inn, as planned, on Wednesday, Aug. 12; Baccalaureate will be the following evening, Aug. 13; the Senior Dinner and Class Night will be on Friday, Aug. 14; and Commencement will fall on Saturday, Aug. 15.

“To the Class of 2020: I regret that you will have such an unprecedented delay between the end of your senior year and these celebratory recognitions. We’ve pushed them out this far in order best to guarantee that they can happen; we’ll make them worth the wait,” Mayo concluded.
