Ruth Douglas

SEBAGO — Ruth Ann (Mulderig) Douglas, 73, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday July 18, 2022, at 6:57 a.m. after a long courageous battle with stage 4 renal failure. Dialysis was NOT her cup of tea.

She was born to the late Edward F. Mulderig and Madeline T. Lachance Mulderig at the Webber Hospital in Biddeford on September 30, 1948.

After graduating from Old Orchard Beach High School, she enjoyed being a candy striper (PCA) at several local nursing homes.

She met the love of her life, when two mothers met and became friends while working at Fairchild Semiconductor. They swapped pictures of their children and there the love story began. Steve and Ruth met on January 29, 1969, and married April 19, 1969, and their love only grew everyday through the ups and downs of 53 years of marriage.

Ruth delivered mail for East Baldwin and then Sebago for 32 years. She was voted into office as a Sebago Town Selectperson for more than eight terms, a total of 24 years.

After retiring from mail delivery, she worked as a switchboard operator for central registration at Bridgton Hospital.

Mom enjoyed spending time with her family and very close friends. She adored everyone, especially her grandchildren. She had three biological children and handfuls of others that called her Mom. She loved afternoons at the Sebago Town Beach with her kids, friends and community members. Another place she held dear in her heart was Barker Pond, where our family spent many summers with the Anderson’s, Chase’s, and Dolloff’s families. She was an active member of the PTC while her children attended Sebago Elementary School. She enjoyed being a member of the Sebago Ladies Auxiliary. We remember her spending hours on the phone calling community members for donations of hot dogs and sides for bean suppers. She also enjoyed visits with Kenny and Vera Noble and long chats on the phone with her best friend Gail Irish.

She is predeceased by her parents, her brother Steve Mulderig and in-laws Philip S. Douglas and Lucretia D. Douglas; brother-in-law Abe Parker; and many aunts uncles and cousins.

She leaves behind her beloved husband of 53 years Philip S. (Steve) Douglas; daughter Jody Blanchet and husband Scott; daughter Heidi Theriault and husband Shannon; son Scott S. Douglas and wife Lisa.

Ruth left behind her beautiful grandchildren who were her pride and joy: Nathan Blanchet of Sebago, Melanie and Ron Hall of Valdosta, Ga., Hannah Burnell and Dayle Gray of Naples, Matthew Douglas of Harrison, Philip and Brady Burnell of North Waterboro, Nicole and Josh Shrier of Denmark, Seth Theriault of North Waterboro, and Ashley Hutchins and significant other Steve Vacchiano of Sebago.

She was also predeceased by many loving pets.

She was anxiously awaiting the birth of her very first great- grandchild to Mel and Ron. After her decision was made to stop dialysis, she was excited of the thought that she could be in the delivery room with Melanie while she gives birth in spirit.

She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Diana Letellier and her younger siblings Terri Turgeon of Biddeford; Michelle Knaus of Scarborough; Madeline Mulderig of Farmington, N.H. and Michael Mulderig of Saco. Also, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ruth’s services were held Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the Sebago Town Hall, 418 Bridgton Rd., Sebago. Visiting hours were held from 1-3 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. funeral service, with a reception immediately following.
