As town works on new logo, long debate over ‘Lake’ or ‘Lakes’ Region

NAPLES — Is it Lake Region? Or is it Lakes Region?
That is a discussion that, in certain circles, has taken up to an hour to entertain everyone’s opinion.
Is it heart of the lakes region or heart of the lake region — that is the question.
“We spent a whole meeting on this. We really could not get a good answer,” said Naples Town Manager John Hawley.
On one hand, there is one big lake, which is Sebago. Also, New Hampshire has already coined the lakes region. Plus, the town has Lake Region High School.
On the other hand, there are multiple lakes in the Town of Naples.
This topic was brought up at the Naples Board of Selectmen meeting recently because the lakes region is being used in the town’s logo.
‘Lakes’ is plural because there are a number of water bodies in the town’s boundaries.
The logo was revitalized to have branding, which is a consistent image for the town.
“What started this process was the fact that Naples has many municipally owned signs around town, and few of them have uniformity in regard to the look,” Hawley said.
“All the signs when driving into Naples have different color schemes, different fonts, different styles,” he said.
“As we look to replace the signs, it was important that we decided on what that uniform look was going to be,” he said.
Last fall through the winter, the Naples Branding Committee, a group of six people, met routinely to take a look at the Naples brand. The committee considered whether to replace or to freshen-up the logo.
It seems the committee came full circle, settling on a slight change to the geese flying over a pine tree image.
“This is 95% the old logo, but different,” Chairman Jim Grattelo said.
The board voted to adopt the logo.
