FRYEBURG — Charles Anthony Condello, 67, of Fryeburg, died on July 1, 2019, in Fryeburg.

Charles was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., on Sept. 6, 1951. He is predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Doris (Draggett) Condello.

Charles grew up in Fredonia, N.Y. He graduated from Fredonia Central High School in 1969, and the Boston Conservatory of Music, with a bachelor’s of Music degree in Applied Clarinet in 1974. He received his Massachusetts Teaching Certificate from Eastern Nazarene College in 1976, and graduated from Cambridge College, with a master’s of Education degree, in 1990.

In Charles’ 40-year-long music education career as an instrumental and general music instructor, he had been selected five times for inclusion in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,” beginning in the 1995 edition. Charles was also selected as a lifelong member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Honorary Music Fraternity. Charles retired in 2016.

He studied clarinet with Attilio Poto, former clarinetist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Serge Koussevitzky. He also studied clarinet with Peter Hadcock, former member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Some of Charles’ performances as a clarinetist included: solo clarinet performance in Boston’s Symphony Hall, conducted by Rouben Gregorian, 1974; clarinet solos on Boston’s Classical Music Radio Station, WCRB, 1975-1976; first clarinetist with the Boston Conservatory Orchestra, 1971–1975; first clarinetist with the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, 1973; performed clarinet solos and woodwind chamber music with the internationally renowned concert pianist, Balint Vazsonyi, 1974–1977; Performed with various members of the Boston Pops Orchestra, 1971–1975; Premiered Boston University Music Professor, Dr. Hugo Norden’s Clarinet Composition; Premiered Boston Composer Merton Brown’s Clarinet Composition on Boston’s Classical Music Radio Station, WCRB.

Charles married his wife, Ann (Musto) in 1982, and together they raised three beautiful children: Paul, 32, a teacher who completed his master’s of Education degree at Columbia University; John, 30, a middle school science and math teacher in Maine, who has also performed several times with the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra as a percussionist; and Debbie, 28, is a medical secretary in Maine. His wife, Ann, was a music teacher in the public schools and a private piano instructor.

He had been an avid amateur radio (HAM Radio) operator for at least 40 years and held an Advanced FCC Amateur Radio License to operate. He had made thousands of radio contacts all over the world.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at Our Lady of the Mountains Roman Catholic Church, 2905 White Mountain Highway, North Conway, N.H., at 11 a.m., on Thursday, July 11.
