Edward Niemi, 87

Edward Niemi of Norway Maine passed away Sept. 15, 2021, at Hospice House in Auburn.
He was born on October 17, 1933, in Norway, Maine, son of Arvo and Gladys (Damon) Niemi. He attended schools in Waterford and Norway. He farmed over 100 acres in Waterford and operated a farmstand in Bridgton for many years. In later years, he started a woodworking business making and selling Adirondack chairs, window boxes, and other woodworking products selling on e-bay and local businesses including Chilton’s of Freeport and Scarborough. His community involvement included being a member of the 4-H Club for many years in his youth, former member of the Bear Mountain Grange in Waterford, and member of the Appeals Board in Stoneham.
One of his proudest and most recognized contributions was to the sport of stock car racing. He raced primarily at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford for over 20 years beginning his racing career at age 16. Along with his wife Lois Niemi, received the Pioneers and Veterans Award special recognition for significant contribution from the Maine Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Many knew him as the “flying farmer.”
He is survived by daughters Diane Mowatt of Windham and her husband Timothy; Donna Heyne of Texas and her husband Kent; grandchildren, James Niemi and his wife Jodi of Pownal; Angela Mowatt of Gorham and great-grandchildren Jack and Edward; sisters, Marian Paine of Norway and Anna Wadsworth of Oxford.
He is preceded in death by his wife Lois; sister Helen Edmunds; and parents Arvo and Gladys Niemi.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Androscoggin Home Health Hospice and Hospice House for their support and compassionate care.
